Horseshoe beach is an isolated, laid back, friendly fishing village located on the Gulf of Mexico west of Gainesville. We are a small town in the country yet at the water’s edge. Our town sign at the cattle-gap reads – -Welcome To -Florida’s Last Frontier-. We are 20 miles to the closest major highway, and 20 miles west of cross city, 70 miles west of gainesville and 115 miles south of tallahassee. Yes we have both -seminoles and gators-.

We have approximately 99 full time residents and on weekends and holidays our population can swell to 300-400. Horseshoe beach has a great sense of community and friendliness.
.
The Horseshoe Beach area was settled in the early 1800s. The land was owned by lumber interests until 1935, when C.C. Douglas and Burton Butler purchased the land (for $324), since the lumber company was pressuring the residents to -move on-. The Butler/Douglas union made it possible for the settlers to own their occupied property. They offered each resident the lot he was living on for $10. Even then some would not buy, but at least now there was a town where residents could stay and own the land. Burton was the postmaster and later the first mayor.

The name was changed from Horseshoe to Horseshoe Beach in 1948. The town eventually incorporated in 1963. In march 1993, during a high tide and a full moon, the -Storm of the Century- hit and devastated Horseshoe Beach. It ripped most of the towns homes from there foundations and left many of the buildings that remained, floating in the canals and in the gulf. Then to top it off, it snowed.

Now rebuilt, mostly up on poles, it is a changed face from the past. There is now a small, but successful, fishing fleet. The waters have an abundance of fish such as sea trout, red fish, sheep head, cobia, mackerel, grouper and flounder. Our shell-fish are stone crab, blue crab, oysters, scallops, and clams. Scallops when in season, bring many families to our coast for the annual scallop round up. Basically we have the best darn fishin hole in this part of the world.

For those that like to canoe, rowers and other watercraft users we have off-shore islands to explore. You might just find your -private beach-. With so little traffic our roads are great for bicycle touring, while the back-woods' roads are great for mountain bikes. Hiking along our rural roads is a great way to share our last of florida’s wilderness coast... You might just see an american eagle, an alligator or maybe even a panther.

horseshoe beach is located on the gulf of mexico in the big bend of florida. it’s 179 miles north of tampa airport, 100 miles north west of ocala, 179 miles northwest of orlando airport, 77 miles west of gainesville airport, 100 miles south east of tallahassee, 130 miles southwest of jacksonville. get on us19 & us98 to cross city, turn in front of the ace hardware store, go 19 miles westish on state highway #351 to the gulf of mexico and your in downtown horseshoe beach.

TO HSB FROM ORLANDO (MCO) AIRPORT:
exit the orlando airport toward orlando.
just out of the airport take the exit route #528, bee line expressway, toward florida turnpike.
after the second toll booth (approx. 5 miles) (1st toll is 75 cents, the 2nd toll is 50 cents) exit to the florida turnpike (another 50 cent toll).
follow signs turnpike north, wildwood, toward ocala.
approx. 50 miles north on turnpike, merge right onto i-75 north
approx. 20 miles north, in ocala, take exit route #27 toward williston (left under bridge).
stay direction straight (the route number changes to alt#27) on that road 20 miles to williston, 10 more miles to bronson, 10 more miles to chiefland.
in chiefland turn right north at the -t- traffic light onto us route #19, 10 miles to fanning springs, 5 miles more to old town, 10 miles more to cross city.
in cross city turn left at the ace hardware store.
go 19 miles on state highway #351 to horseshoe beach.

TO HSB FROM JACKSONVILLE:
take i-10 west to us 441 (second lake city exit) toward lake city (south). in the center of town turn right (west) on us 90 , then turn left on 247 south toward branford (turn is just past the 84 lumber place at the walgreen drug store).
take 247 south to branford.
when road dead ends on 129 turn left and go 2 blocks. turn right on us 27 north.
go 1.3 miles north on us 27 over the suwanee river then turn left (south) on fl 349 (flashing yellow light, road says old town).
go 14.1 miles on fl 349 then turn right on cr 351 which is the 2nd flashing yellow light you will encounter.
go 12.3 miles on cr 351 to cross city. turn right at light onto main street (us 27). go 2 blocks and turn left (onto cr 351 again) in front of the ace hardware.
go 19 miles on state highway #351 to horseshoe beach.

TO HSB FROM TAMPA (TPA) AIRPORT:
exit airport and follow signs to -veterans expressway- #589 toll, north.
take #589, toll road (sometimes called suncoast parkway) north approx 55 miles till it ends.
turn left (toward homosassa and crystal river) for approx 4 miles.
turn right on hwy us#19.
go thru homosassa and crystal river and continue on us#19 approx 75 miles thru towns of chiefland, fanning springs, old town and into cross city.
in cross city turn left at the ace hardware store.

welcome to horseshoe beach florida usa.

as on of the few towns that is right directly on the gulf of mexico, the atmosphere here is just plain, well, as billy puts it “only in horseshoe”. wade says that, “this here is the best damn fishin hole in merika” and as it turns out, it is, but, julia notes, horseshoe is also “coming of age”.
use to be, one in the family would love to fish horseshoe, and the other wouldn’t be caught dead in the town, or maybe would. but that’s all changing.
just an example. penny runs a woman’s boutique / antique / craft shop that challenges atlanta. paul has a marine and hardware store that puts west marine n home depot n pep boys to shame. toms the best concrete guy this side of brewster kansas. john fishes the finest stone crabs you ever laid butter on. joe n ramona run a most dependable café. danny n elsie have a great rv n lodging place. dennis rents houses. jimmy sells horseshoes finest properties. buddy runs the shrimp boat, ed gets fish. joeseph builds super quality sheds n storage rooms. will offers condos. tina has the inn n bunkhouse. steve fishes n runs the town services. gwen is the postmistress (does that sound right gwen?) anyway the post office. bev runs town hall. edward builds sea walls. sammy runs the sea tow. flo runs the library. rob can fix, build or create damn near anything. donna runs a hotel so clean and so fine that they didn’t have enough stars to rate it. gary n jane have the marina runnin smooth with a nice little trap bar drinking establishment out back.
we have boat ramps, tackle store, joe has beer & wine, and what ever you do, don’t yell captain, cuz they will come runnin out of the woodwork.
capt. gary patterson, capt. charlie summerlin, capt. cecil kight, capt. rob ilves, capt. sammy royal, capt. john liebach, or capt. john squires. inshore, scallops, cruises, charters, offshore.
kidding aside, they all have a specialty that honors the other.
wow, i lost it there for a moment.
what i really mean is that all these are the folks that keep horseshoe, and maybe america, running. they are waiting for you. so come on down. get out the flip flops, the bike, the boat, the kids, the golf cart, run around town, meet some folks. make new friends. heck, they wont bit, and for sure they are all personalities.
and the best thing is that they all support each other, and you, to make horseshoe a great town and a great experience.

* it’s on again. horseshoe’s 2nd annual “spring festival” scheduled for saturday the 21st of april, 2012. beginning at 10:00 am, there will be a parade (lineup at 10:30 am) with our own "dixie high school marching band", vendor booths (vendor space $15, call patti 352/498.2662), fish fry / seafood / hamburgers, food, fun, and well, festivities. proceeds to benefit horseshoe library, for more info, contact the horseshoe beach library 352.498.0180 for details.

* come on fishing in february, thats right, the seasons have changed for reds and trout and you can fish horseshoe in february. see: www.myflorida.com and/or ( http://www.myfwc.com/fishing/saltwater/hot-topics/ ) for details.

* with little fanfare but lots of class, the long awaited and anticipated “trap bar” opened its doors to horseshoe. the trap’s opening day atmosphere was more of a public house, as couples, friends and neighbors gathered to discuss the days events. dubbed as “a fishing, scalloping, beer drinking, the way florida was, kinda place”, the trap is socially and culturally different from the horseshoe café, lily creek, or the store. the trap is a social gathering place based on the sale and consumption of soft drinks, beer and wine, of which they have a nice selection. located adjacent to the horseshoe marina the trap is open wednesday thru sunday at 352/498.5687. since the closing of tina’s “dockside” marina, horseshoe’s fun n family bar, horseshoe has been in need of an establishment where, as gary patterson, the proprietor, says, “a nice place where a lady can bring her husband”. in many places around the world, especially in small towns and villages like horseshoe, a place like “the trap bar” can be the important focal point of the community.

* with the latest technology being required more and more, folks in horseshoe beach have begun actively searching for an entity that would be able to supply cellular service to our community. there is property available in town, as well there has been an offer in providing a 20+ acre property for use as a cellular tower or cellular site to service the surrounding area. located at shired island, this cell coverage area could create a seamless service, filling the gap, from steinhatchee, florida, 40 miles south east, thru horseshoe beach and suwannee, to cedar key, florida, as well as on the gulf of mexico in a high density recreational boating / fishing area. if you, or anyone you know, has a business, or any contacts or connections with a cell service provider, wont you please put them in touch with rob ilves at ( 352.498.6067 or icuworldwide111@aol.com ). there is also a letter at the bottom of this web site, that could be forwarded to their attention. we sure would appreciate your efforts.

* horseshoe's newest company has unveiled their super invention, "the power spud". people say: “power-spud makes fishing more convenient, in that i dont have to walk around my anchor anymore, and my wife especially loves it because she doesn’t have to pull in the heavy anchor.” and “i wish i had this on my boat years ago. fishing is easier, and my lines are free from interference with the anchor line.” horseshoe beach welcomes the innovation and the invention. 352.498.1058 for details.

* the horseshoe marina is open for the season. the lift is open friday, saturday and sunday. the marina has bait and tackle, beer and beverages as wells as ice and supplies as well, non ethanol gas available. stop in and see what an improvement they have made, including the new trap bar.

* horseshoe’s only hotel has openings, its cooling down and the fishing is great. it sure is clean and comfortable. see ( www.horseshoesonlyhotel.com ) for some photos.

* horseshoe beach cafe is open for lunch and dinner. they have a variety of great items, beer and wine is also available.

* panama paul’s discount marine supply & hardware & paint department & convenience store is open 7 days a week on main street and they have it all. they seem to expand their inventory almost daily and the entire team is helpful and friendly.

* lilly creek cafe is serving dinners.
